Redona

Every July, between €700M and €800M in tax refunds for donations land back in the taxpayer's account and dissolve into everyday spending before becoming the next donation. Redona closes that leak with a single checkbox.

The problem

Of the 22 million annual tax returns filed in Spain, 17 million result in a refund. About 4 million of those include a donation deduction. That money — already recognized as a refund — passes through the taxpayer's checking account before it can be reinvested. That's where it gets lost: the fiscal Black Hole.

Mechanism

How it works Redona

Box 723

A new checkbox on the tax return: "Would you like your donation refund transferred directly to the beneficiary organizations instead of your account?" The taxpayer checks it once; it's revocable at any time.

Zero cost for the State

The Tax Agency had already decided to refund that amount. Box 723 doesn't change the sum, only the recipient of the transfer — from the donor's account to the NGO's, in the same proportion as the original donations.

The Liquidity Trigger

The mechanism activates at the peak liquidity moment for Spanish households: the annual tax season, culminating on July 2nd.

Ulysses Pact

The box is checked at the moment of highest generous intent — when declaring the donation — not months later, once the refund has blended with other income.

The same precommitment principle adapts to other fundraising contexts: Donalizar, Viaje Semilla, Matching Seed, WallaDona and Teaming Five are variants of the Magic Box applied to charity events, crowdfunding and the sharing economy.
